A note from our co-founder on her birthday & what will forever more be known as Cup Your Cakes! Day!

A note from our co-founder on her birthday:

I’m not one to be “touchy-feely” but today I’m not only going to be, BUT I’m going to encourage all of you to be as well. Early detection of breast cancer through self breast exams can LITERALLY save your life or save the lives of those who you care about. Today is my birthday and as I am officially a year older than I was yesterday, the more I realize

how thankful I am for those in my life that I’m still celebrating with especially my mom who was diagnosed with breast cancer last November (maybe its the wisdom with old age).

So, I’m getting this “Cup Your Cakes” Day started by performing a self breast exam and donating $1 to show my participation and support of DILAW and I hope you will too xx

Have a great day y’all! xxL

To be Gluten-Free or Not to be?

To be Gluten-Free or not to be? Refinery29.com published an article today MUCH different from the normal gluten-free roundtable discussion. Why? because it shows 8 individual stories about what living a gluten free lifestyle means.

Our own co-founder Lauren lives a gluten free life & while she can’t tell you there is any conclusive link to gluten & breast cancer, she will tell you she’s living a much healthier lifestyle since giving the wheat up. So, gather a little more information today & if you are really brave, put the cupcake down.

Could this be the “Giving Tree”?

Could this be “The Giving Tree”? The Soursop tree, a large flowering evergreen native to tropical America & the fruit of its “loins” a large fruit weighing five pounds or more– high in vitamins B and C–is linked to inhibiting growth of human breast cancer. How do you consume it? eat it alone, have a cold drink or frozen recipe, or drink it as a tea–either way this is a pretty powerful fruit!

Tits’ Tips: Animal Kingdom: Orlando, Fl

Our first Tits’ Tips coming to you from Orlando, FL.

Yesterday, Tits & part of the DILAW family visited Disney’s Animal Kingdom & collected valuable research about the place & of course, about your breast friends…

Tits’ Tips:

Tits’ Travel Tip: In Africa (the theme park version), in the village of Harambe which is based on the Kenyan town of Lamu, you can find Harambe Fruit Market. & while we have yet to find an actual juicing-juice place, the fruit market is the closest we’ve come! It is also an excellent place to stop for a snack! The market which is more of a cart has packaged mango halves, fresh strawberries and even Odwalla smoothies!

Looking for more of a meal? Another great eat is Yak & Yeti or Yak & Yeti Local Foods Cafe (if you are on the go)–Disney’s fine Pan-Asian cuisine. They are also great places to stop after you get your adrenaline pumping at Animal Kingdom’s Everest ride or on the River Rapids.

Tits’ Breast Friend Tip: This is a DUH! moment, but we are starting out easy…Did you know that women should perform a breast self exam (BSE) at least once month? Don’t know how? google it….or click here!

Win or Lose.

Unless you are living under a rock or on some remote island with no television, internet or social interaction available (in which case you wouldn’t be reading this blog post), you know what time it is: NBA Conference Finals time.

And, with the rivalries set with the Boston Celtics matched up against the Miami Heat in the Eastern Division and the San Antonio Spurs against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference—competition is at an all time high. Which has been making for some damn good basketball for all viewers out there, BUT it also should be inspiring you to get out there & participate in some friendly competition yourself.

Especially, since breast cancer survivors who participate in competitive sports can reduce their risk of relapse and improve their heart function, according to a new study. High-level exercise is also linked to longer survival.

So, grab another body, engage in some “trash” talk,  & heat things up with some physical activity of the sporting kind.

You can even take the time as an opportunity to support your ladies or all ladies in style. Dwayne Wade sported fuschia pants after a big win against the New York Knicks (Miami’s former opponent) & we’re still loving it! After all, pink is always #winning!

disclaimer: endorsing this picture still doesn’t mean I’m taking sides…

Just remember, win or lose, be a good sport. We’re all winning with the health advantages!

Let’s Memorialize the Weekend!

I have a friend who famously says every weekend that “today is a day for beach, babes, & boats” & most weekends in South Florida, he is RIGHT. He’s even more correct on memorial day weekend!

BUT, for us nutritionally savvy babes & dudes, memorial day can come at a HUGE price to our diets & the rocking bikini body we start off with at 9 a.m. can take a turn for the flab come 5 p.m.

Part of Do(ing) It Like A Woman is being the healthiest, best version of ourselves–so, how do we maintain our standards & memorialize the weekend? Here’s how to do just that.

BRONZE, BABY, BRONZE.

Without a doubt, we are sex goddesses and gods when we are a glowing brown hue…Cellulite is non-existent, we look thinner, & we feel goddamn good. BUT, tell me you entered into a tanning booth to get that glow & I might slap you. For years, I was right there with you–in fact, I might have asked to borrow your peepers or some tanning lotion–but when I finally took my fingers out of my ears and listened to the research linking melanoma and tanning booths (really listened)–I was SCARED & I stopped: cold turkey.

So, how else can we get a fast tan fix? EASY. SELF TANNING LOTION. Yeah, yeah, yeah…I know you don’t want to look like Snooki & you don’t want to clash with your orange bikini…ME NEITHER & neither does anyone who isn’t from the jersey shore cast.

I self tan weekly (I live in Miami, a tan is a pre-requisite) & because I care about your glow & your health I’ll happily share my secrets.

1. EXFOLIATE. I am in love with Sprout Skincare Products! IN L-O-V-E. Their Exfoliant ($28) is all organic, all-natural & all AMAZING. Best part: a little goes a looong way. Exfoliate with this first & I’ll guarantee your body will be a streak free, glowing masterpiece.

2. LOTION UP: I alternate between two lotions: Jane Iredale’s Tantasia ($36) and Origin’s The Great Pretender ($20). They are easy, smooth, & know how to operate. What more could you ask for?

3. RUB IT IN. Applying the lotion has been a topic of debate in many beauty and health magazines (I’ve read them all). My advice: Use a glove. Two great options are the St. Tropez Tanning Mitt ($6) or Ulta’s Sunless Tanning Mitt ($4.99). So, give yourself a rub down & get going!

Now, on to the GRUB

My friends will tell you, I am not one to sacrifice the party for ANYTHING & for years that included my health. But, with the amount of effort I put into my health and with the new research linking even small amounts of weight loss with a decrease in the return of breast cancer: i’m not willing to sell my soul to the God’s of Fat in return for a slice of memorial day cake–& neither should you be.

BURGERS are synonymous with Memorial Day. And who doesn’t look sexy in a bikini at the grill? Guys, you also know how to work it in those grilling aprons! So, here are 6 bikini-friendly burger recipes that won’t leave you purveying the room for a better option! (via Women’s Health Magazine)

To see more burgers & for recipes, click here.

Whatever your plans are, this weekend, take time to toast your friends with a creative concoction (remember to keep light on the liquor, heavy on the water) and make this memorial day one full of honor. Honor for our troops & honor for yourself!

Mythbustin’ Monday: Is it Victoria’s secret that’s causing breast cancer?

NO! While we have yet to discover exactly what Vicki’s keeping so quiet about, it certainly isn’t a link to breast cancer.

I repeat: there is no evidence to the claim that breast cancer is more than 100 times greater in women who always wear bras as opposed to women who never wear bras. It’s just a nasty internet rumor like when the new Iphone 5 is going to be released and the leaked details of Kim and Kanye’s secret marriage

Dr. Ted Gansler, director of medical content for the American Cancer Society says, “There is no scientifically credible evidence of this, he said, and the proposed mechanism — that bras prevent elimination of toxins by blocking lymph flow — is not in line with scientific concepts of how breast cancer develops.”

So, bra aficionados like myself, take a deep breath & give your chest a lift or if you want, let them breathe. Either way, you aren’t doing wrong by your ladies.

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring…Don’t Leave Your Body Snoring…

It has been a rainy couple of days in South Florida, which is arguably the only time we head indoors & actually work. And, while I may be joking with that comment, rainy weather is the perfect time to cozy up with a drink and catch up on some reading.

Yesterday, I found myself on the couch with a GREAT book: Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Diet, but I was left wondering: What to drink? Fighting the urge to pour a whiskey on the rocks, I opted for the MUCH healthier option of The Crazy Sexy Green Guru Smoothie–& was blissed out.

& when I come across something this great, I SHARE it. So for all of you who have heard about the benefits of green juice & green veggies & all things green, BUT haven’t tried it yet–try this. It’ll leave a smile on your face.

Why do I keep using all these “happy-centric” words? Well, because this smoothie is contains natural Phenylethylamine (PEA) aka “the love chemical”. PEA is known to create feelings of attraction, excitement, or euphoria. Ever been in love? Part of that process is your PEA levels increasing making us full of (sometimes) blind optimism.

When the brain is flooded with PEA, the neurotransmitter dopamine is blocked from being deactivated and dopamine levels rise. Elevated dopamine levels are associated with increased mental concentration and a positive attitude.

So, FALL IN LOVE WITH A SMOOTHIE…its okay, there’s no judgement here–There are worse things that you could fall in love with.

THE GREEN GURU SMOOTHIE:

Ingredients:

  • 1 avocado
  • 5-8 romaine leaves
  • 1 cucumber
  • 2 ounces E3Live (optional)
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 1 banana or 1-2 pears
  • Stevia to taste or 1 tsp agave

Directions:

Place all the ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth…BLISS OUT!
